10. [In the southern part of the U.S., people think (that) eating Hoppin' John on New Year's Day brings a year full of luck and prosperity. Originating from African slaves on southern plantations, Hoppin' John is cooked mainly with black-eyed peas and rice, which represent coins.]
※In the southern part of the U.S:미국의 남부지역에서는  ※eating Hoppin' John on New Year's Day:새해에 Hoppin' John을 먹는 것(주어 ) ※hoppin(g) John:(쌀·완두콩) 베이컨 스튜 ※brings a year (which is) full of luck and prosperity:행운과 번영이 충만한 한해를 가져다 준다.(brings:동사)  ←관계대명사의 생략: 주격관계대명사+be동사, 목적격 ※be full of = be filled with: ~으로 가득차다. ※prosperity:번영  ※Originating from African slaves on southern plantations:남부 농장의 아프리카 출신의 노예로부터 기원한(분사구문: =As it originates from~~~) ※originates from: ~에서 비롯되다. 기원하다. ※African slaves:아프리카 노예들 ※on southern plantations:남부 농장에서(plantations:농장, 농원) ※is cooked mainly with: 주로 ~으로 요리되다. ※black-eyed peas and rice:검정 완두콩과 쌀  ※,which represent coins:그것들은 동전을 나타낸다.(관계대명사 계속적 용법:= and they represent coins) ※represent:나타내다. 상징하다. ☞미국의 남부지역에서는 사람들이 새해에 Hoppin' John을 먹는 것이 행운과 번영이 충만한 한해를 가져다 준다고 생각한다. 남부 농장의 아프리카 출신의 노예로부터 기원한 Hoppin' John은 주로 동전을 나타내는 검정완두콩과 쌀로 요리된다.
