Language and Communication : New encounters(새로운 만남)

1. [When people encounter a new culture or language firsthand, they are often surprised or even shocked. What are these new encounters like for young people like you? Read these letters to find out.] 우연한 만남  ※firsthand:직접의, 직접적으로 ↔ secondhand(간접적인)  ※What~like = how, what~ for = why  ※these new encounters:이러한 새로운 만남  ※young people like you:당신같은 어린 사람  ※Read these letters to find out: 이 편지들을 읽고 알아보아라(Read these letters if you want to find out(조건을 나타내는 부사적 용법)      ☞사람들이 새로운 문화나 언어를 처음으로 접할 때 그들은 종종 놀라거나 심지어 충격을 받는다.

2. [Dear Mr. Kim, Hi. How do I look in the photo? It was taken when I visited Holly wood with my host family. I am having a great time at Arroyo Seco High. The other exchange students from Korea are also enjoying their time in California. Everything is fantastic, except the language barrier.]        ※It(=the photo) was taken~: 사진이 찍힌 것임으로 수동(be+p.p)를 써야함에 유의.   ※host family:(외국인 방문객을 받아들이는) 민박 가정  ※The other exchange students from Korea:한국에서 온 다른 교환학생  ※Everything is fantastic:모든것이 환상적이다.(every~, each~ + 단수동사)   ※except the language barrier:언어장벽을 제외하고   ※barrier:장벽, 장애물     ☞친애하는 김선생님께, 안녕하세요?

3. [A funny thing happened on Monday. Some of my friends said "What's up?" to me, and I gave a lengthy answer. I was trying to explain what actually happened to me over the weekend. As I was talking, however, they hurried on their way, not listening to what I had to say. I later found out (from my host family) that the expected answer was "Nothing."] ※lengthy:긴, 장황한 ※what actually happened to me: 실제로 나에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지?(간접의문문: 의문사(주어) + 동사 어순) ※hurried on their way:서둘러서 그들의 갈길을 가다. ※not listening to what I had to say:(분사구문) 동시동작: 내가 말해야 했던것을 듣지 않으면서(=as they didn't listen to~) ※what I had to say:내가 말해야 했던 것(what은 선포관: ~하는 것) ※I later found out (from my host family) that~: 나는 나중에 (호스트 패밀리로부터) that이하를 알게 되었다.(that은 명사절로 목적어 역할) ※the expected answer was "Nothing.":예상된(일반적인) 대답은 nothing이었다. 내 친구들 몇몇이 나에게 What's up?

4. [There was another time (when) I didn't understand a common __EXPRESSION__. When I was keeping score during a basketball game, my friend made a 3-point shot. He was so happy that he ran toward me and said, "Give me five!" I was at a loss because I didn't know why he wanted me to give him five points when he made a 3-pointer.] ※made a 3-point shot:3점 슛을 하다.(make a shot: 슛을 하다. ※so ~ that:너무 ~해서 ~하다. cf) so that~may = so as to = in order to:~하기 위하여 cf), so that~:~해서 그 결과 ~하다. ※Give me five!":친구의 의도: 하이파이브 하자, 글쓴이가 받아들인 의미: 5점을 줘 ※be at a loss:어쩔 줄을 모르다. ※why he wanted me to give him five points:(간접화법: why do you want me to give you five points) ※made a 3-pointer: 3점슛을 하다(make a 3-point shout)          ☞내가 평범한 표현을 이해하지 못했던 때가 또 있었다. 내가 농구게임동안 점수를 기록하고 있었을 때, 내 친구가 3점슛을 성공시켰다. 그는 너무 좋아해서 나에게 뛰어와 Give me five라고 말했다. 나는 당황했다 왜냐하면 나는 왜 그가 3점 슛을 넣고 5점을 달라고 했는지 몰랐기 때문이다.

5. [While I was thinking about this, he went to another friend who was nearby, and they gave each other a "high five." I realized that I had totally misunderstood. When I told my host family about what had happened, everyone laughed. Sometimes English is harder than it seems!]       ※each other:(둘)서로 ※who:주격관계대명사   ※I realized that I had totally misunderstood:나는 내가 완전히 오해했다는 것을 깨달았다.(깨달은 것 보다 오해한 것이 더 과거임으로 과거완료를 사용했음에 유의)  ※When I told my host family about what had happened:나의 호스트 패밀리에게 일어났던 일에 대해 말했을 때(what:은 선포관: 과거완료 주의)    ☞내가 이것에 대해 생각을 하는 동안 그는 근처에 있는 또 다른 친구에게 가서, 서로 high five를 했다.

6. [Everything else is great here, though. My new friends and I have many things in common. We love computer games and sports! I am sure I will have a good time for the rest of my stay here. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
