Good Habits - Little Details, Big Problems
1. [An online computer game company recently conducted an interesting experiment. On April 1, 2010, (which is also known as April Fools’ Day in the U.S.,) about 7,500 customers bought products from the company.] conduct:시행하다(execute, carry out) ※which:관계대명사의 계속적 용법 ※be known as: ~로서 알려져 있다. ※April Fools’ Day:만우절 ※about 7,500 customers:약 7500명의 고객 ☞온라인 컴퓨터게임 회사가 최근에 흥미로운 실험을 했다. 미국에서 만우절로 알려진 2010년 4월 1일에 약 7500명의 고객이 그 회사로부터 제품을 구매했다.
2. [Before completing their purchases, they had to agree to the company’s terms and agreements by clicking “Yes.” All the customers clicked “Yes,” but it seems that nobody read the terms and agreements.] ※purchase[[pə́ːrtʃəs]사다, 구매하다. cf) chase[[tʃeis]쫓다, 추적하다 ※terms and agreements:약관 ※terms:(계약 등의)조건, agreement:합의 ※by clicking:클릭함으로써  ※it seems that~ = seem to~: ~인 것 같다, ~인 것처럼 보이다. ※it seems that nobody read the terms and agreements. = nobody seems to have read the terms and agreements. (완료부정사임에 주의) ☞구매를 마치기 전, 고객은 “예”를 클릭하여 회사의 약관에 동의해야 했다. 모든 고객이 “예”를 클릭했지만 아무도 약관을 읽은 것 같지는 않다.
3. [As an April Fools’ Day joke, the company had inserted a new rule. It said, “Customers (who do not click on a special link) must give their souls to the company.”] ※as:~로서 ※고객이 온라인상 약관을 읽기 전에 이미 회사가 약관에 규칙을 입력했으므로,  과거완료(had inserted)를 사용했음에 주의 ※say:~라고 쓰여있다 ※who는 customers를 수식해 주는 주격관계대명사 (주어:customers, 동사:must give) ※own:소유하다, 자백하다, 자신의 ☞만우절 농담으로, 그 회사는 한 가지 새로운 규칙을 삽입했었다. 거기에는 “특별 링크를 클릭하지 않은 고객은 자신의 영혼을 반드시 회사에 바쳐야 합니다.”라고 쓰여 있었다.
4. [Nobody clicked on the link, and now the company owns all of those customers’ souls. The online computer game company was not alone. Another computer company tried a similar experiment.] ※own:소유하다, 자백하다, 자신의 ※all of those customers’ souls:모든 고객들의 영혼 ※Another:또 다른 ☞아무도 링크를 클릭하지 않았고, 이제 회사는 그 고객들 모두의 영혼을 소유하게 되었다. 그 온라인 컴퓨터 회사만이 아니었다. 또 다른 컴퓨터 회사도 유사한 실험을 시도했다.
5. [In its terms and agreements, the company inserted a bit of extra information that said (that) any customer (who read them and sent an email to the company) would receive a $1,000 reward.] ※In its terms and agreements:그 약관에 ※a bit of extra information:약간의 부가정보  ※that은 a bit of extra information를 수식하는 주격관계대명사 ※(that)은 접속사(생략되어 있음) ※who~:선행사 any customer을 수식하는 주격 관계대명사 ※them=its terms and agreements ☞ 그 회사는 약관을 읽고 회사로 이메일을 보내는 고객은 천 달러의 보상금을 받게 될 것이라고 쓴 약간의 부가정보를 회사약관에 삽입했다.
6. [Four months later, after thousands of customer visits to the website, someone finally read the details, emailed the company, and claimed the $1,000. But the first few thousands of customers did not read the details, and missed out on the free money.]
※thousands of customer visits:수천명의 고객방문(수천 명의 고객이 다녀간 후) ※visit는 타동사로 사용될 경우 명사 목적어를 취하므로 전치사구를 직접 취하지는 않습니다. 따라서 visits는 복수명사 형태로 봐야 함이 옮음. ※과거형 동사 read, emailed, claimed는 접속사 등위접속사 and로 연결되는 병렬관계로 시제가 일치해야 함(reads가 아님에 주의) ※the first few thousands of customers:처음 몇천명의 고객들 ※miss out:놓치다 ※the free money:공돈 ☞4개월 뒤, 수천 명의 고객이 그 웹 사이트를 다녀간 후, 드디어 누군가가 그 세부항목을 읽고 회사로 이메일을 보냈고, 천 달러를 요구했다. 그러나 처음 몇천명의 고객은 세부항목을 읽지 않았고, 공돈을 놓쳤다.
7. [Although the two stories above are quite humorous, their message should not be taken lightly. Overlooking details can often result in serious problems. Consider the following mistakes (which are) made by people doing their jobs:]
※Although:비록 ~일지라도(though, even though, even if) ※take A lightly: A를 가볍게 여기다 ※should not be taken: 수동형임에 유의 ※their message should not be taken lightly = you should not take their message lightly ※Overlooking details: 세부사항을 간과하는 것(overlook:간과하다: 동명사가 주어로 사용됨) ※result in:(결국)~이 되다, ~을 낳다. cf)result from:~에 기인하다(be caused by, arise from) ※the following mistakes (which are) made by people: 사람들에 의해 행해진 다음과 같은 실수들 ※doing their jobs:= while they do their jobs: 그들이 일하는 동안(근무중에) ☞비록 앞의 두 이야기가 꽤 익살스럽다고 할지라도, 이야기가 전하는 메시지를 가볍게 받아 들여서는 안된다. 세부사항을 간과하는 것은 종종 심각한 문제를 일으킬 수 있다. 사람들이 근무중에 저지른 다음 실수들을 한번 생각해 보라.
